Love is all you need
On a certain level I believe this to be true.
In an ideal world where our love for our fellow human beings is vast and unconditional, there is no reason for conflict and war; every man, woman and child is sufficiently fed and nurtured; and the world is a happy and free place to be.
“If someone thinks that love and peace is a cliché that must have been left behind in the Sixties, that’s his problem. Love and peace are eternal.” – John Lennon
In reality however, it can be difficult to cultivate this sense of unconditional love. We often expect too much from others and then get saddened and frustrated when they don’t live up to our expectations.
But what would happen if we developed more of a sense of compassion than a sense of entitlement? If we focused on ‘doing good’ in our relationships and our lives rather than on ‘doing well’. Channeling our actions towards the benefit for others instead of only to improve our own situation.
“Love recognizes no barriers. It jumps hurdles, leaps fences, penetrates walls to arrive at its destination full of hope” – Maya Angelou
Communication is key to any fulfilling relationship. This means not only the words you use, but also the actions you take, the way you look at each other and how you physically interact.
“A hug is like a boomerang – you get it back right away” – Bil Keane.
Cultivating a sense of playfulness and fun will lift your relationship out of the mundane and remind you both that playing and laughing together is often the best solution for keeping the romance alive.
“Anyone can be passionate, but it takes real lovers to be silly” – Rose Franken
With thoughts turning to Valentine’s Day we have a reminder of the importance of love in our lives. So in your romantic relationship and also in your relationships with family and friends, consider what you can do to nurture and grow your bonds this month.
“The more we care for the happiness of others, the greater is our own sense of well-being.” – Dalai Lama
With plenty of research suggesting that one of the keys to continued happiness is ‘giving to others’, it seems like a perfect way to do good and at the same time improve our overall sense of happiness and wellbeing.
